Scytodes thoracica  (Latreille 1804)
Main synonym = Aranea thoracica    Latreille, 1802
Taxonomical Classification:  Animalia / Arthropoda / Arachnida / Araneae / Scytodidae
Spitting spider     Maltese name not known
Further Information:
Scytodes thoracica hunts by spitting two threads of venomous silk at its prey, hence its common name.

The unique ability of producing such silk is a result of having silk glands attached to venom glands. This spider does not chase its prey down as it moves quite slowly (unless disturbed). Prey, once covered in venomous silk, is immediately immobilized - ensuring that the spider can devour its meal without the risk of injury.
